The rocking chair is a piece of furniture that dates back for centuries. For ages upon ages, mothers have rocked their babies in these chairs. People have sat in their living rooms, bedrooms and even their porches and rocked away the time in a relaxing and comfortable chair. Rocking chairs are great for sitting, reading, watching TV or just relaxing. Outdoor rocking chairs, however, are made a bit differently than those made for strictly indoor use. One need only consider the rigors of the outdoors to see why.

A chair for the outside of your home is going to need to be weatherproof. Even if you plan to sit it on your front porch, or a covered area, it is still susceptible to damage from UV rays even if it doesn't get wet. On untreated wood, UV rays can cause fading and cracking. Therefore, choose a rocking chair for the porch or patio that is crafted from an outdoor-safe material like teak wood. Teak wood makes a wonderful traditional wood with a bit of exotic flair. There is no staining required because the color is already rich and beautiful.

Teak wood grows in the monsoon forests of Asia and is highly prized for making outdoor patio furniture. A rocking chair made from this wood could stand up to the rigors of sun, rain and more, while remaining pest repellent. One reason for this is the natural wood produced by the teak itself that helps add protection. Also you can find teak that has been treated with synthetic finishes that help it last for decades. If this is a bit out of your price range, there are other chairs made for the out of doors.

You can actually find metal outdoor rocking chairs but most of them are going to be vintage. These chairs were made out of a lightweight metal or aluminum and painted black, white, yellow, red, green or another eye catching color. They did not come with cushions and rocked on their curved metal rockers. There are rocking chairs made from resin wicker that look like fine woven materials but is actually a material that can stand up to almost anything while retaining its beauty. No matter what material you choose, make sure your rocking chair is made for outside if that is where you want to use it.
